Monsoon affecting Silchar badly

SILCHAR, July 5: The monsoon-hit areas of Silchar looks alike with all the nook and corners of Silchar afloat on accumulated rain water virtually. Due to battering rains, public life is on the brink of enormous hardship; water spilling out of the gutters engulfing habitable areas; everyday new stretches of land are getting submerged under deposited waters. The footpaths with numerous potholes in the town are causing a major threat to life for the citizens here.

Major thoroughfares including the connecting routes have been long in a dilapidated condition, creating major inconvenience for commuters in Silchar. Besides, there are constrictions at several points due to the piling of solid waste along the road sides. Also, parking lots closer to pavements have aggravated difficulties.

The storm water drainage project to remove accumulated water from the town is a distant dream for the people of Silchar. NBCC, which had taken up the project in Silchar, abandoned the project in the middle and shifted its office to Shillong recently though the ruling party had taken enough political mileage through propaganda and advertisements of the Storm Water Project in Silchar but did little for its implementation in the last five years.

Also many illegal constructions have taken place on the underground drains of the town, blocking the sewage channels here and there. Reference could be cited vividly about the new Silchar and link road areas of the town. Besides, lack of coordination between the district administration and the Silchar municipality are complicating matters, making the problem insurmountable for the people living here.
