Kamalendu Bhattacharjee not to campaign for Ajmal

Moulana, Bhattacharjee not to campaign for Ajmal

: From our Staff Reporter , Silchar Lok Sabha Election
SILCHAR, March 30: AUDF boss faced two major blows in his fight for Silchar LS seat as powerful cleric as well as the advisor of the party Moulana Toyyubur Rahman and former AUDF Cachar Unit president Kamalendu Bhattacharjee had refused to directly campaign for the party in the forthcoming general election. Amir-e-shariyat or the Chief of Northeast Moulana Rahman of Nadwatut Tamir, an Islamic religious organization having considerable influence in the Barak Valley, played a vital role in the formation of the AUDF after the controversial IMDT touted as the shield for the minorities, was scrapped by the supreme court.

The Moulana took active part in the campaigning during the last Assembly election but he could not reportedly subscribe to Ajmal’s decision to fight the Silchar seat as this would indirectly help the BJP. Earlier talking to The Sentinel, the Moulana reserved his comment on Ajmal’s decision but did not indicate his dissatisfaction by admitting that in spite of his being the advisor, the party did not discuss with him in this issue. Ajmal later told that he would personally talk to the to the Moulana. But, a close confident of the Moulana indicated that he had decided not to campaign for the party this time.

Further he was very much dissatisfied for the repeated ego clash between Hailakandi party MLA Salimuddi and district president Anil Nath.

Meanwhile, one time right hand of Congress heavyweight of Sontosh Mohan Dev Kamalendu Bhattacharjee who joined the AUDF after a clash with his erstwhile mentor had turned down the offer for campaigning made to him by AUDF working president Hafiz Rashid Chowdhury on Sunday. Chowdhury along with some of the party MLA’s went to Bhattacharjee’s house and requested him to campaign for the party. But, Bhattacharjee virtually turned down the offer.

Bhattacharjee, who unsuccessfully contested in the last Assembly election as AUDF candidate, told The Sentinel that for some personal reasons he would not be in a position for campaigning for the party this time. Bhattacharjee, who was made the district unit president only to be replaced subsequently, distanced himself for the AUDF soon after he lost the election. He had reportedly even made some desperate attempts to re-enter into the Congress, but was denied by Dev.

Meanwhile, talking to this correspondent, Hafiz Rashid adimitted approaching Bhattacharjee and his refusal. “I am not sure whether he is still in party as he has not tendered any resignation formally”, Chowdhury answered while asked whether Bhattacharjee still belonged to the AUDF.
A source in the party said, party MLA from Katigorah Moulana Ataur Rahman Majarbhuiya played a vital role from the ouster of Bhattacharjee, an influential politician during his long day as Dev’s trusted lieutenant. But this assurance turned out to be futile as Ajmal and his brother Sirajuddin were contesting for these two seats. THE SENTINEL

Ajmal vows to end Santosh-dynasty rule in Barak Valley

29 Mar 2009, 0331 hrs IST, TNN

Assam Lok Sabha Election 2009

This election in Barak Valley will be interesting with the entry of AUDF chief Badaruddin Ajmal. As usual minorities may vote for Ajmal and if that happens then Santosh will be in danger of loosing the election for the second time in silchar LS constituency. In this high-profile and prestigeous silchar lok sabha seat, BJP 's kabindra may be the untimate gainer as this time Santosh will have to face the voters with many unsolved problems of barak valley. Anti-incumbancy and non-performance will be one of the key factor in this election. On 16th April people of Barak Valley will decide their fate.

SILCHAR: Ensuring a three-cornered contest for the prestigious Silchar Lok Sabha seat, Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) chief Badaruddin Ajmal on Saturday filed his nomination for the south Assam constituency with an aim to bring an end to the Devs' dynastic rule.

With this came an end to speculation if the perfume baron would at all field himself against his long-time Congress friend and Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev.

Ajmal said, "Our party is fighting with the aim to oust the corrupt Congress and give the country a transparent and vibrant government. In Silchar, the AUDF is committed to bringing an end to the Devs' dynastic-rule. People of this part of Assam are fed up with them as the area continues to be one of the most underdeveloped ones."

After filing his nomination, a visibly confident Ajmal said he would fight from both the Silchar and Dhubri seats only to make it sure that "people get rid of the Congress misrule". He added, "If AUDF wins, there will be a sea-change in the Barak Valley in the next five years. Something that Congress could not ensure in the past 60 years." THE TIMES OF INDIA

Silchar Lok Sabha Election, Monmohan Singh "weakest" PM

Kheroni (Assam)(PTI): Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Wednesday said that the NDA, if voted to power, would take "drastic action" against foreign militants active in the country.

Addressing his first election rally in Assam, Advani, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, said foreign militants help local militant organisations in carrying out subversive activity in the country.

"The NDA's top priority would be to resolve the problem of militancy in the Northeast by holding discussion with local militant outfits," Advani told the rally held at Kheroni in Karbi Anglong district. On the issue of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, he said that the anti-foreigners movement by the All Assam Students' Union was the biggest such movement in the country, but due to the Congress' attitude towards illegal infiltrators, the problem has magnified.

"The Congress has always given illegal foreigners protection to exploit them for vote-bank politics," he alleged.

LK Advani to campaign for BJP in Assam

Assam Lok Sabha Election

GUWAHATI
, March 22: In spite of the confidence shown by AGP-BJP alliance candidates, namely Bijoya Chakravarty and Ramen Deka at various meetings that are going to come out victorious at the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, opposition leader and BJP bigwig LK Advani is not quite impressed . According to sources, LK Advani will be visiting Asom on March 25 and on the same day he will visit Kheroni, Diphu, Karimganj and Silchar where he would campaign in support of party candidates from the said areas. On March 26, Advani will be visiting Sepa in Arunachal, Tinsukia and Sibsagar to lend his support to the BJP candidates in these areas.

The sources further said that since BJP’s chances of winning in Diphu, Silchar, Jorhat, Karimganj are bright, Advani has taken a keen interest to lend his support to the candidates from these areas but the BJP stalwart is rather apprehensive about the political outcome with regard to the Guwahati and Mangaldoi constituencies and has decided to refrain from campaigning in these two constituencies as he is afraid that he might have to take the blame in the event of BJP suffering defeats in both these said constituencies.

It may be recalled that some AGP members are still dissatisfied over the Guwahati seat going to the BJP and as for the Mangaldoi, BJP State president Ramen Deka’s candidature has come in for a lot of flak especially from BJP grassroot workers in Darrang and Udalguri districts. And since the political situation is rather fluid in these two constituencies, Advani is not too keen on campaigning on behalf of the candidates contesting from the said constituencies.

According to sources, LK Advani is determined on maintaining a clean image and is therefore averse to campaigning in both the Guwahati And Mangaldoi constituencies.

Meanwhile, notwithstanding Advani’s campaign plans in the State and his current stand on the crises with regard to the Guwahati and Mangaldoi constituency seats, many upcoming and senior leaders of the State BJP such as Jayanta Kumar Das, Sasanka Jyoti Deka, Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, Manoj Phukan etc are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to ensure that BJP candidate Bijoya Chakravarty comes out triumphant at the forthcoming LS elections.

Interestingly, AGP’s Nurul Hussain and Ramendra Narrayan Kalita continue to maintain a grim silence on the BJP poll campaign strategies and are none too overt in expressing their support to Bijoya Chakravarty in spite of the fact that they are partners in the AGP-BJP alliance.

On the other hand, BJP State president and Mangaldoi candidate Ramen Deka’s fortunes have apparently reached their nadir. Aside from the support of a few relatively unknown party workers like Palit Bora, Ranjit Thakuria and Nabarun Medhi, Deka is having to wage a lone battle in the forthcoming LS polls this time around. SILCHAR, March 22 – A three-day national conference on recent trends of biodiversity research was organised by Department of Life Sciences, Assam University, Silchar at Bipin Chandra Paul auditorium recently.

In the welcome address, Dr Manabendra Dutta Choudhury, Associate Professor said that many researches have taken place in the entire north east to boost diversity. For this reason University Grants Commission has sanctioned Special Assistance programme to this department. This has provided ample opportunity to conduct researches in the relevant subject.

In his presidential address, Prof Bhattacharjee said that this university is proud to have such talents for the workshop. He further said that this conference would have meaningful contribution from various learned experts from the field of biodiversity studies and allied subjects as well as development agencies. Thereby the conference would prove to be beneficial for the teachers and students of the department to a great extent. Prof GD Sharma, Pro VC and chairman of Organising Committee said that since north east is one of the hot spots of biodiversity of the world and so it is very pertinent that various issues related to biodiversity be discussed in this workshop This national conference has also provided the platform to Assam University for creating the interactive forum of academic collaboration for further researches in the field of Biodiversity.

Prof Gautam Biswas, Pro VC, Humanities and Allied Discipline, said that this type of conference which brings the researches of north east India to the mainstream national research scenario will be of immense importance. BJP gears up for polls in Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency

A Correspondent
NILAMBAZAR, March 22 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Karimganj district committee is gearing up for the forthcoming elections to the Karimganj Parliamentary constituency. In five Assembly constituencies of Karimganj district under the constituency, the party has intensified its poll campaign. In this connection, the BJP under the leadership of Mission Ranjan Das, MLA organised a series of meetings at Chitrabani premises, Nilmoni Road Karimganj town and party office recently.

A party worker’s meeting was held on Wednesday at Karimganj, where all presidents of Mondol BJP and other workers were present. The meeting was presided over by Biswarup Bhattacharjee, president BJP district committee and was addressed by Nitya Bhushan Dey, organising Pramukh in Barak Valley BJP. AGP-BJP optimistic of sweeping polls

GUWAHATI, March 20: In their first joint address to the local media after the successful finalization of the AGP-BJP seat-sharing arrangement, both parties today sounded optimistic of the combine sweeping the forthcoming parliamentary polls, even as the AGP said it is yet to decide on formally joining the BJP-led NDA.

The joint press conference saw the presence of AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary, BJP national vice-president and candidate for Guwahati seat Bijoya Chakraborty, BJP Northeast co-observer Sudangshu Mittal, amongst others. The upbeat meet among both parties could be gauged from Bijoya Chakraborty’s comments as she said, “The AGP-BJP combine will root out the Congress and sweep the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.”

Stating that there would be no joint election manifesto, both parties today spelt out the ‘principles’ on which the seat-sharing arrangement has been agreed upon. Patowary said, “Though there will be no joint manifesto, both parties would lay focus on the same issues. The understanding reached between both parties is based on principles, which reflect the top priority demands and needs of the people of the State.”

Patowary informed mediapersons that a 14-member State-level committee of the AGP-BJP has been formed for smooth coordination between both the parties. “Such committees would be formed at the district and Lok Sabha constituency levels,” he added.

Elaborating on the principles, the AGP chief said the BJP-led NDA, if voted to power, would stop infiltration, seal the Indo-Bangladesh border completely, free the land illegally encroached by Bangladesh, update the National Register of Citizens and issue photo identity cards.

Instead of concentrating on an armed solution, the NDA would lay more emphasis on a peaceful resolution of the militancy problem, Patowary said while adding that the NDA would also declare Asom’s flood and erosion as a national problem.

The AGP, however, is yet to decide on formally joining the BJP-led NDA. Stating that such a decision would be taken only in the post-poll scenario, Patowary said, “No decision has been taken on joining the NDA as yet.”

Refusing to comment on the possibilities of the AGP joining the NDA, BJP Northeast co-observer Sudhangsu Mittal said, “For the time-being we have a seat-sharing arrangement here, what the future holds can not be said now.” THE SENTINEL

Infra companies get some good engineers, finally

Mumbai: The slowdown has come as a boon to the construction sector, at least on the talent front. With recruitment offers for engineers from the IT sector drying up this year, construction and infrastructure companies are having a field day recruiting at top engineering colleges, including the vaunted Indian Institute of Technology (IITs).

Till last year, engineers from highly-ranked institutes were hired by IT companies, leaving other firms including those in the infrastructure space, with no option, but to go to second-rung colleges.

C K Singh, senior vice-president, human resources, Patel Engineering, said infra firms are in a more favourable position this year. "We are definitely able to attract more skilled engineers, especially civil engineers," he said.

Patel Engineering hired around 23 engineering graduates last year, while this year it has recruited 21, mostly from National Institutes of Technology (NITs) at Silchar in Assam and at Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh. The firm plans to recruit 35-40 in the next few months.

Festival of colours with family : Debojit Saha

Festival of colours with family
- Singer rues the sacrifices that come with being a celebrity

Voice of India Debojit Saha on how he celebrated Holi in his hometown after seven years

I celebrated Holi, the festival of colours, with gusto this year. It was only natural. After seven years I got an opportunity to be part of the festivities with my family and friends in Silchar.

In fact, it was the only festival I have celebrated in my hometown in a long time. So, it was a very special Holi for me.

I literally went berserk, smearing colours on the faces of friends and relatives, most of whom I met after a gap of several years. They, needless to say, did the same. I was also forced to sing a couple of Holi songs, immortalised by Bollywood, on popular demand to make it special for all of us.

Smeared in love and affection of my people, I realised what I had been missing all these years, spending festivals amid a busy and gruelling work schedule.

After all, a festival — or life itself — is nothing without family and friends. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for me to find time during festivals to be at home. Festivities are actually the busiest season for public performers like us with a series of stage shows lined up.

In other words, we have to drop our celebration to entertain our fans and well-wishers. These sacrifices often go unnoticed as people only see the glamorous side of a celebrity. Beneath the veneer of glare and limelight, it is sheer hard work, dedication, pain and sacrifices that go to make a celebrity. Stardom exacts its own price and at times it can be a heavy one.

I had also another reason to celebrate this Holi. My baby daughter turned one month just a day before the festival. In fact, I had rushed to Silchar on March 10, a day before Holi, to see my daughter achieving a milestone. I now look for an opportunity to run to see her and with every such visit I find her grown; but that is the way it should be...it is so natural and yet I can’t stop marvelling.

These days she has started making gestures and immediately looks up when we call her by her name — Danika. It is a strange feeling to be a father. And without knowing she has already given me her first gift. It is for her that this Holi became so special, so colourful and memorable.

I have already started looking forward to more such years of love and togetherness. Thank you, my little darling. THE TELEGRAPH

The party may also field Rajesh Malla from the Karimganj parliamentary seat.
His name is likely to be formally announced in a day or two, AUDF sources said.

Hub to train drivers for hilly terrain

March 19: A driving institute at Dholcherra, about 20km from Silchar, will soon provide training to drivers who have to negotiate treacherous hill paths.

The central project, which will be undertaken under the aegis of the Union heavy industries ministry, is being sponsored by the newly constituted National Automative Testing and R and D Infrastructure Project at an initial grant of Rs 50 crore.

The Dholcherra project is part of seven such schemes — at Manesar in Haryana, Oragadam near Chennai, Pune, Indore, Ahmednagar and Rae Bareilly at a cost of Rs 1,718 crore.

P.B. Dev, officer on special duty of the Dholcherra project, said the scheme would be undertaken in two phases on 65 acres of land.

Another sub-centre under this centre will be opened at Japhirbond under Udarbond block in Cachar on a 20-acre plot of land to train the drivers and automobile mechanics on the management of vehicles. A regional vehicle management centre and institute for training of motor technicians would be set up at Japhirbond, he added.

The first phase of this project is slated for inauguration in the middle of this year.

The second and final phase of commissioning of the project is scheduled for early 2011. Dev said a wide of array of skills relating to car driving will be imparted to the drivers, both commercial and amateur, so that safety requirements are maintained. He added that once the driving institute at Dholcherra is set up, it would be the first such institute in the country.

A state-of-the-art hill driving track on a 700-metre stretch with a two-way path is being prepared to induct the drivers, particularly those who haul heavy cargo trucks.

Dev said the institute would be empowered to issue competence certificates to the drivers, depending on their driving skills. It will also provide job opportunities in both the government and private sectors. The first lesson will be for drivers who run passenger buses through the hill roads in Mizoram, Meghalaya and Manipur in a four-day orientation camp at Dholcherra from April 8.

To help the drivers get a feel of driving on hill roads, two Japan-made simulators would be used at the Dholcherra centre.

Union heavy industries minister Sontosh Mohan Dev said: “The Dholcherra centre would usher in a new era of responsible and safe motor driving in Assam.” THE TELEGRAPH

Silchar to meet railmen in final

Nuruddin Trophy

Guwahati/Dibrugarh, March 16: Defending champions Silchar will clash with last year’s runners-up, NF Railway, in the final of the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy senior inter-district cricket tournament elite group in a replay of last year’s final.

While Silchar tamed Nagaon by 276 runs in a semi-final played at NF Railway Stadium here today, the railmen prevailed over hosts Dibrugarh by 234 runs in the other semi-final at Dibrugarh District Sports Association Stadium in Dibrugarh.

The match will be held in Guwahati, though the date is to be finalised, keeping in view the NF Railway team’s clash of dates with the all-India inter-Railway meet.

“We will fix the dates as soon as the NF Railway Sports Association makes its team available for the final match,” said Assam Cricket Association secretary Bikash Baruah.

Chasing a mammoth target of 473 runs in the second innings, the Nagaon men resumed at the overnight 65 for three to be bundled out for 196 in 51 overs on the last day of the four-day match today.

In Dibrugarh, the home side was bundled out for 112 runs in 35.4 overs, chasing a second innings target of 347 runs.

NF Railway today resumed their second innings at the overnight 219 for eight and added only 12 more runs to be all out for 231.

The Dibrugarh players alleged that the match was “imposed” upon them. They said they were not prepared for the match as some of the key players like promising offspinner Prasanta Sonowal had their exams.

“When we heard about the dates, we requested the DDSA and the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) to reschedule this match. However, our pleas were not heard,” one of the players said. THE TELEGRAPH

Failure of Congress will be main poll issue of BJP: Kabindra Purkayastha

SILCHAR, March 16: Failure of the Congress government both in the Centre as well as in the State in completing two national projects like Silchar-Lumding broadgauge and East West corridor in Cachar district will be the main issue of the BJP in Silchar in the forthcoming general election.

This was indicated by Kabindra Purkayastha, whose name had been officially declared as party candidate by BJP’s Central Election Committee today in Delhi after a prolonged discussion that lasted almost five days.

Purkayastha was a former Minister in the Vajpaye led government as well as one of the main architect of the Saffron camp in the Northeast spoke to The Sentinel just after receiving the news of his name being finalized by central leadership.

Purkayastha who had earlier lost the election to arch rival Sontosh Mohan Dev by a mere margin of 20,000 votes, said, this time he would definitely win as the people of Silchar had been suffering terribly for the last five years.

“Rampant corruption in the administration fuelled by the ruling party leaders has stalled the wheels of development in Cachar district.” Purkayastha further said that the local MP as well as the Union Minister Dev had miserably failed to put aside the hurdles in the national projects like broadgauge.

Purkayastha said that Dev in his long political career had promoted the contractor raj and hence the main road of the town is in a pathetic condition though crores of rupees had reportedly been pumped for the construction of the road. “People would definitely seek answer to this question- where have all the money gone and Dev has to answer it”, Purkayastha said. Lalu’s adverse comment on Silchar-Lumding BG line flayed

CORRESPONDENT
KARIMGANJ, March 16 – Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav while speaking in the Lok Sabha recently on the Railway Budget blamed the Assam Government for its non-cooperation regarding implementation of the Silchar-Lumding BG Project.

APCC general secretary Pradip Dutta Roy in a statement took serious exception to the statement of the Union Railway Minister. Pradip Dutta Roy expressed concern over the Railway Minister’s statement and termed it as totally false and baseless.

The statement of the Railway Minister could cause confusion among the people of Assam as a whole and Barak Valley in particular. He said Silchar-Lumding BG has been declared a national project and hence it is absolutely the responsibility of the Union Government not only to take care of the necessary funds, but also to took into security-related problems

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh being an elected representative from Assam should take personal interest and create pressure upon the Railway Ministry for giving appropriate emphasis on the expeditious implementation of this project, which is the life line of Barak Valley, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur, added Pradip Dutta Roy.

The unfortunate statement of the Railway Minister in the LS will have political impact on the prospect of Congress candidates in the ensuing LS polls, speculated Dutta Roy. ASSAM TRIBUNE

SILCHAR, March 16 – Most of the bureaucrats in Barak Valley have been reshuffled, but Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Gautam Ganguli was retained in the same position.

Information received said Ganguli had not completed three years remaining only few days, which according to Election Commission rule can be retained. But it has been seen that reshuffling is done not considering this rule in most of the cases.

This issue has now become a public whispering considering forthcoming Lok Sabha poll. During panchayat election Ganguli had not shown so much of integrity in many cases. ASSAM TRIBUNE

Kabindra to contest from Silchar

NEW DELHI, March 13 – The BJP today managed to finalise the list of candidates for six seats in Assam, keeping Guwahati and Mangaldai seats pending. However, a formal announcement is expected tomorrow. The meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC), headed by national party president, Opposition Leader, LK Advani, joined Rajnath Singh besides other senior members.

Party sources said the meeting today finalised the list of candidates for six seats. Nowever, differences of opinion over candidates for Guwahati and Mangaldai seats remained. Sources said indications by Deka expressing his willingness to switch to Mangaldai seat complicated the selection process.

The Party had narrowed down the selection to Ashok Singal for the seat, surrendered by the sitting MP, Narayan Borkotoki.

Till the time of filing of this report, it was still tough fight for Bijoya Chakravarty, though she is reportedly ahead in the race for Guwahati seat, as she was backed by majority of the Central members.

Sources confided that CEC has zeroed down its list to K Daulagaphu (Diphu), Kamakhya Prasad Tassa (Jorhat), Nilomani Rai Pradhan (Dhubri), Rajen Gohain (Nagaon), Kabindra Purkayastha (Silchar) and Sudhansu Das (Karimganj). source: assam tribune

Assam perfume baron's party to support AGP in parliamentary polls

Guwahati (IANS): In a surprise move, perfume baron and Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) leader Badruddin Ajmal Saturday said his party will back candidates of Assam's main opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in next month's parliamentary elections.

"If we think that some AGP candidates are good and competent with a secular face, then we might help them in some seats to win the elections," Mr. Ajmal told IANS.

Mr. Ajmal's stand is significant as the AGP has a pre-poll tie up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the AUDF is known to be a party espousing the cause of the minority Muslims in Assam.

"The AGP is not in an alliance with the BJP, but just has a seat sharing arrangement. Our stand is clear, we are not going to support the AGP-BJP combine and would only back AGP candidates wherever we think it does not clash with our own candidates," the AUDF president said.

Mr. Ajmal's stand comes a day after AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary said his party would have preferred an alliance with the AUDF for better performance in the elections.

"We are fighting Congress and BJP forces. We have no problems with the AGP and still hope we can work out a partnership with the regional party in the future," the AUDF leader said.

The AUDF was formed just before the 2006 assembly elections and managed to win 10 of the 126 assembly seats thus becoming the third largest party in Assam after the Congress and the AGP.

"We would put candidates in eight to nine seats of the 14 parliamentary seats on our own and hope to win in four to six seats," Mr. Ajmal said.

He himself will contest from two seats - Dhubri and Silchar.

Mr. Ajmal said actor Suresh Oberoi is willing to contest the parliamentary elections from Assam on an AUDF ticket.

"I am not ruling out the possibility of fielding Oberoi. Let me tell you filmstars and glamour are today part and parcel of politics...from Dharmendra to Hema Malini and now Sanjay Dutt. Actors are liked by the people," said Mr. Ajmal, a man who is also a Maulana (cleric) from the well-known Muslim seminary in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh.

"We hope some film stars would come for campaigning," said Mr. Ajmal, who has made a fortune by exporting 'ittar' or traditional Indian perfume, primarily to the Middle East.

Political analysts and opposition parties are of the view that the AUDF would be a crucial factor in the polls as Muslims account for about 30 percent of Assam's 26 million people.

"Surely the AUDF would be a major factor in the elections and I have no hesitation in admitting this political reality," AGP president Patowary told IANS.

But Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi of the Congress party said AUDF is not a factor and cannot impact the poll outcome.

"It is for the people to judge which party is a factor or could command the support of the voters...why pre-judge the minds of the electorate?" retorted the bearded AUDF leader, skull cap in place. source:http://www.hindu.com

AUDF, CPM in tug-of-war over Silchar seat

.

Silchar, March 13: The litmus test of unity for Assam’s third front, cobbled up to fight the Congress and AGP-led alliances in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, began ominously today with a battle brewing between two of its constituents over Silchar constituency.

Both the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF), the leading party, and the CPM are determined to field candidates from Silchar, with the minority front’s chairman, Badruddin Ajmal, declaring himself as the “fittest” to take on the Congress and the BJP.

Ajmal’s announcement came after the CPM’s central committee in New Delhi announced last week that on the basis of the arrangement chalked out by the third front in the state, it has nominated Dipak Bhattacharjee as its candidate for the Silchar seat.

Bhattacharjee is a former MLA from Hailakandi.

Ajmal claimed over phone from Guwahati today he was the fittest candidate from Silchar to fight both the Congress and the BJP.

“We have already given the Tezpur seat on a platter to the CPM. So now it is the turn of the CPM leaders to consider vacating the Silchar seat to make way for the AUDF nominee to become the unanimous candidate of the third front,” Ajmal said.

The CPM secretary for Cachar-Hailakandi districts, Samiran Acharjee, on the other hand, said it would be difficult for his party to get the candidature of Bhattacharjee rescinded as his nomination from Silchar seat had already been cleared by the party’s central committee.

The AUDF’s insistence to field Ajmal from Silchar along with Dhubri appears to have queered the pitch for the CPM.

Ajmal, however, hoped that the CPM would see reason and withdraw Bhattacharjee’s candidature in the greater cause of waging a common fight for development of the backward Cachar area and a crusade against the “rampant corruption by the Congress overlords and a section of officials in the district”.

He said he would soon meet the third front leaders — the other constituents are the CPI, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Bodoland People’s Progressive Front — and the CPM, in Guwahati to arrive at a consensus on his nomination from Silchar.

The final list of the third front candidates will be released on March 18, Ajmal added. THE TELEGRAPH

Santosh and M Shuklabaidya from Barak Valley

.
NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI, March 12: Against the stand taken by All India Congress Committee’s general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, not a single youth candidate has made it to the list of Congress Lok Sabha poll candidates for Asom. Barring candidates for Dhubri and Lakhimpur constituencies, AICC spokesperson Manish Tiwari today announced 11 candidates who surprisingly included sitting Tezpur MP Moni Kumar Subba whose credentials as Indian citizen are open to question and are being investigated.

The 11 candidates who have been cleared for Congress tickets are Robin Bordoloi for Guwahati, former minister Ismail Hussain for Barpeta, Anil Raja for Nagaon, sitting MP Moni Kumar Subba for Tezpur, Union minister BK Handique for Jorhat, former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Pabon Singh Ghatowar for Dibrugarh, Madhab Rajbongshi for Mangaldai, Union Heavy Industries Minister Santosh Mohan Dev for Silchar, sitting MP LM Shuklabaidya for Karimganj, Biren Singh Ingti for Diphu and Dip Gogoi for Kaliabor. Candidates for Lakhimpur and Dhubri are yet to be named. While Rani Narah and Bobeeta Sarma have been vying for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha ticket, sitting MP Anwar Hussain, former minister Wazed Ali Choudhury and Abdul Hamid have been in the race for the Dhubri ticket. Talking to The Sentinel from New Delhi, APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita said: “Candidates for Dhubri and Lakhimpur constituencies will be named within a day or two.”

Of the nine sitting MPs of the Congress from Asom, the fate of Anwar Hussain is yet to be decided, while sitting Barpeta MP Golam Osmani is not a ticket aspirant of the party this time around. Among the remaining seven MPs, barring Kirip Chaliha known for his anti-Gogoi stance, all got party tickets. Chaliha had sought party ticket either from Guwahati or Mangaldai.

With today’s announcement of candidates of the party, there will be only one woman candidate in the Congress from Asom, and that is for the Lakhimpur seat, but there will be no youth leader of the party in the fray in the State. This is despite the repeated announcements made by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi that the youth would be given more importance in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Robin Bordoloi and Anil Raja are new faces, but they are not young leaders. East Guwahati MLA Robin Bordoloi, barring his family legacy by virtue of being the son of Gopinath Bordoloi, has literally no standing as a political leader as to be roped in for the prestigious Guwahati seat.

When contacted, sitting Guwahati MP Kirip Chaliha only said that he was busy at a meeting. THE SENTINEL

BSF mulls new training institute

.
BSF mulls new training institute
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Silchar, March 12: The BSF is scouting for a plot in Cachar to set up a centre that would train recruits in counter-insurgency and urban terrorism operations.

A top BSF source today said the Union home ministry has sanctioned a plan to set up a Subsidiary Training Centre that would offer lessons in weaponry, firing skills, explosives management, stress management, human rights and tactical operations.

The Cachar administration is helping the BSF identify the ideal location for the centre.

The district already has a similar training centre in Doyapur, about 12km from Silchar, where the CRPF train their jawans on ways to deal with militants.

The largest counter-insurgency training unit in Asia, the Counter-insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, is also located only 40km from Silchar, at Vairengte in north Mizoram.

The centre was set up in 1978 following a spurt in guerrilla operations in Nagaland and Mizoram.

It gradually came to be known as one of the best counter-insurgency schools, with soldiers from the US, the UK, France, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Egypt, Brazil and Mongolia trooping in regularly for training.

The BSF training school, once built, will be the third such institute in that zone.

Though the primary duty of the BSF is to guard the border, it has been drawn into counter-insurgency operations in militant-ridden areas like North Cachar Hills, necessitating training in guerrilla warfare.

Three battalions of the BSF now guard the border along the Barak valley.

Cachar has its share of one battalion, though a BSF source said another battalion may be deployed soon. THE TELEGRAPH

Ajmal named candidate for Silchar

GUWAHATI, March 12: The Cachar district unit of the AUDF has named party president Badruddin Ajmal as its candidate for the Silchar Lok Sabha seat even as the Third Front is yet to settle the AUDF-CPI(M) disputes over the Silchar, Tezpur and Barpeta Lok Sabha seats. The constituents of the Third Front — AUDF, CPI, CPI-M, NCP and BPPF — that met in Guwahati on March 10 failed to settle the AUDP-CPI(M) and NCP-CPI disputes over seat-sharing arrangements. Both the NCP and CPI want to field their candidates in the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat.

Talking to The Sentinel, NCP general secretary Akshay Rajkhowa said: “The Front has urged the AUDF and the CPI-M to settle their disputes over Silchar, Tezpur and Barpeta seats through talks. The front will meet again on March 18 to finalize the seat-sharing arrangement.”
Talking to The Sentinel, veteran CPI-M leader Hemen Das said: “We have been asked to settle our disputes with the AUDF over the Silchar, Tezpur and Barpeta seats, but we are not going to sacrifice any of these seats. We have already named candidates for Silchar and Tezpur seats, and we are going to name our candidate for the Barpeta seat a well within a day or two.”
Meanwhile, AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal announced recently that Bollywood star Suresh Oberoi is keen on contesting as an AUDF candidate from Asom. THE SENTINEL

Lakhipur: Normalcy limping back

SILCHAR, March 8: Lakhipur sub-divisional town, 45 km form here, which turned volatile on Saturday due to police-public confrontation over the issue of arrest of the criminals behind the murder of Binata Sharma, college student, is limping back to normalcy, according to civil and police sources.

Hari Charan Bhagat BDO of Banskandi has been entrusted with the responsibility of looking after law and order. 147 Bn CRPF is patrolling the streets of the town, maintaining round the clock vigilance. In the meantime, under public pressure police has taken into custody Amarjit Singh and Ramen Sharma on the ground of their being involved in the murder of Binata Sharma. Following ransacking of the police station by a strong mob of rallyists who were staging protest under the banner of six different organizations, police first had to baton charge and then fire in the air, besides lobbing tear-gas shells, in order to disperse them. In order to control the rampaging mob, CRPF had to be requisitioned to maintain law and order.

Opposition parties-BJP and AGP-have in separate statements condemned strongly the action of police and CRPF for their indiscriminate lathi charge on people in which around 40 persons were injured. The opposition has demanded proper investigation and trial of the criminals. Ajit Bhattacharjee and Reena Singh, BJP leaders, and Chouba Mia, general secretary of the AGP Lakhipur town committee, has cautioned if the sub-divisional administration fails to book the assailants, they would be forced to launch vigorous agitation.

They have also accused the sub-divisional administration of its abject failure to provide security to common people. They reminded the matters of murder of Suparna Das and Babul Roy of Lakhipur in the recent past, the police has till date failed to bring to book the criminals behind the twin murders.

The murder of Binata Sharma from all reckoning will be an election issue for the opposition. Dinesh Prasad Goala, minister of urban development, who has been winning from this Lakhipur constituency since 1980, has become butt of severe public criticism for his failure to send either his nominee or representative to the town in this critical moment. source: the sentinel

International Women’s Day observed

SILCHAR, March 8: International Women’s Day was observed today by Human Rights Organization of Cachar in the auditorium of Axom Xahitya Xabha under the presidentship of Irabat Singh. Prominent personalities who graced the occasion included Dr Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Sanchita Ganguli, Chabi Gupta and Nandita Dutta Roy. Speaking as Chief Guest, Dr Bhattacharjee brought out the significance of the day and the important role now being played by women in different walks of life. He said, he was inspired by the ideals of his mother which shaped his body and mind to reach the pinnacle of success.

Sanchita Ganguli pointed out every year the day is celebrated in honour of women in order to project their stories of success and failures. The success of women in the field of education is worth mentioning. They are also subjected to various ills prevailing in society and needs care and protection. Chabi Gupta in her own way said motherhood is the most beautiful part of a woman. It is from her that people learn all about love, affection, patience, tolerance and service.

Bithika Acharya said a woman is successful and her life meaningful when she with her motherhood and qualities guides the family and the society on the path of virtue and value. Dr Bijoy Lakhi Das was of the opinion that celebrating the day would serve no purpose unless the message reaches the society to raise voice together against the abuses now being perpetrated on women. Dr Jayati Bhattacharya expressed the view that it is the collective voice of women in general which can take the society and the nation on the path of peace and progress. source: the sentinel
